Whether you live in the city or in a rural area, animals getting into your trash can create a mess and headache. There are some things that you can do to prevent this from occurring on a regular basis. Here are some tips on keeping animals out of your trash
- Change Placement of Bins
When all else fails, you may simply need to change the location of your bins. Consider placing them inside a secured shed or garage.
Ammonia is known to deter animals. You can use straight ammonia or even Windex. You can spray it inside of your trash bag or inside of your trash barrel and lid.
- Secure the Lid
There are a few different ways to secure the lid of your trash bin. Some will work better than others depending on how smart the animals are in your area. The first option is to purchase a bin that has a lid that locks or stays firmly in place. Metal trash cans and commercial grade plastic bins will usually have this feature. If you are unable to find such a bin, you can place a brick on top of the lid, but be careful as using one too heavy may damage the lid. A third option is to tie down the lid using a bungee cord or a chain and lock.
Install a motion sensor light pointed in the direction of your trash bins. This will often scare animals away.
Keeping animals out of your trash will minimize the clean-up required on your property. Animals not only make a mess as they rip open trash bags, but that exposed trash will also attract flies and other animals. You may first want to try the less expensive solutions before taking more dramatic measures.
