Tips on Preventing Your Trash from Blowing Away

trash barrelsEveryone has probably experienced this at one time or another. You put your trash out on the curb on a windy day and you return home to find it missing. More than likely, it simply blew down the road with the wind. If you’re lucky, that didn’t happen until after the trash was picked up. Otherwise, not only do you have to hunt down your trash barrel, but you may also have trash strewn about your property that you must then clean up. Here are a few tips on preventing your trash from blowing away on windy days.

  1. Make Them Heavy – Heavy barrels are less likely to fall over or blow away. If you have a light load of trash, think about putting a brick or something else heavy at the bottom of the barrel to weigh it down.
  2. Compact the Trash – Avoid overfilling your trash barrels with items at the top that can easily blow away. Keep all trash inside bags or under a closed lid, if possible.
  3. Avoid Round Barrels– Round trash barrels roll away more easily that other shapes. If you live in a generally windy area, consider other shaped barrels.
  4. Promptly Retrieve Barrels – After trash pickup, retrieve your barrels as soon as possible. The longer they stay out, the more likely they are to blow away.

Observing these tips on preventing your trash from blowing away can you save you the time of cleaning up a messy situation or the cost of replacing your trash barrels.
