If you’re getting ready to move, one of your tasks will likely be to look through all of your belongings to decide what to trash, keep, sell, or donate. Here are some tips to help you make some of those difficult decisions.
To Keep, or Not to Keep,…That is the Question
The first real decision is deciding what to keep or not-to-keep. Think about when you last used the item, and whether you are likely to use it in the future. For smaller items such as clothing, one-year is a good time frame to consider. If you have not worn/used the item within the last year, it is probably not worth keeping.
What’s It Worth?
For items that you have decided not to keep, you must then evaluate whether it should be trashed, sold, or donated. If the item has some value and is easy to ship, it is probably worth selling. Resources such as Craigslist or eBay are worth looking into. If the item has little value, think about whether it will be useful to others. Those items can be sold at a yard sale or donated to a local charity. Many charities have pick up services for clothing, furniture, and household goods. If the item has no value and no use (i.e. it’s broken), then it can go in your trash pile.
Disposing of Trash
Depending on the amount of trash that you have, it may make sense to rent a dumpster. Dumpsters allow you to easily and cleanly dispose of a larger volume of items. They come in many sizes and are placed in a convenient location on your property. You may arrange to keep them for very short periods of time or longer time frames, depending on your needs.
